Every year, UK footballers swap Saturday league games for floodlit university stadiums in the United States. The route is well trodden, but it rewards players who plan early and understand the process rather than hoping to be discovered.
The five-step route
- 1. Get an honest assessment of your sporting and academic level.
- 2. Build a recruitment profile and match footage coaches will actually watch.
- 3. Target the right divisions and programmes — not just the famous names.
- 4. Communicate with coaches and compare offers carefully.
- 5. Complete eligibility, admissions and student visa paperwork.
Why step one matters most
Most wasted time and money comes from skipping the first step. Players email hundreds of Division I coaches who were never a realistic fit, while strong NAIA and Division II programmes that would have offered real funding are overlooked.
Start with a Stride USA assessment — a £75 video evaluation or a £150 in-person match assessment. If you continue with a Stride package, we build every next step on that honest starting point.
Timing matters too. Ideally, UK players start the process 12–24 months before their intended August or January start, giving time for exams, footage and coach conversations.
