How to Get Scouted by US College Soccer Coaches

Coaches do not find you by accident. The practical steps to put your name, footage and grades in front of the right programmes.

Waiting to be 'discovered' is not a strategy. The vast majority of US college soccer recruits are recruited because they made themselves visible — with targeted, well-prepared information sent to coaches who actually fit their level.

Make a credible target list

Scattergun emails to 200 coaches rarely work. Build a realistic shortlist where your football level, academic profile and position need genuinely match the programme. Coaches delete generic mass emails within seconds.

What coaches actually want to see

  • A short, high-quality highlight video hosted online — three to five minutes, best clips first.
  • Up-to-date academic information: GPA, core courses and any test scores.
  • Physical and positional details: position, dominant foot, height and key measurables.
  • A fixture list of where and when they can watch you play live.

Every pathway starts with a first touch.

Showcases, tournaments and assessment days are where live scouting happens. Sending your information ahead of an event means a coach arrives already knowing your name and your number, which is how a trial turns into an offer.

Exposure without honesty wastes everyone's time. Targeting programmes two levels above your current standard burns goodwill. Aim at the fit, not the name.
