Two players of the same age can currently receive different eligibility outcomes because their division and first full-time college enrolment date may place them under different rules. That makes the 2026-27 transition period especially important for families considering a gap year.
Division I: the transition year
For prospects enrolling full time for the first time during 2026-27, a Division I university can apply either the previous model — four seasons within five years — or the new age-based model, whichever gives that athlete the more favourable result. Current athletes with eligibility remaining after 2025-26 receive the same comparison.
Division I: fall 2027 onwards
For prospects first enrolling full time at any college or university in fall 2027 or later, the new age-based model applies on its own. The clock starts with first full-time college enrolment or the academic year immediately after the player's 19th birthday, whichever happens first.

Division II: already in force
Division II adopted a similar age-based model effective for the 2026-27 academic year. It establishes a five-year eligibility period using the same two main triggers: first full-time college enrolment or the academic year immediately after the athlete's 19th birthday.
- Write down your date of birth and intended US enrolment term.
- List every college or university where you have studied full time, in any country.
- Tell advisers about every organised team and competition played during a gap year.
- Ask each recruiting university to confirm its compliance assessment in writing.
Do not choose a gap year from a headline alone. A one-term difference in enrolment can change which framework applies.
The NCAA lists limited exceptions under the age-based model for pregnancy, active-duty military service and official religious missions. These require no organised competition during the exception. General travel, academy training or an ordinary football gap year is not listed as an automatic pause.
