Playing Against US Players: What Coaches Notice

When UK players face American opposition on tour, coaches are watching specific things — and it is rarely the highlight-reel skills.

One of the biggest gaps in UK-to-USA recruitment is calibration. Players — and parents — often have no idea how their level compares to American college players until they share a pitch with them. Our tours are designed to close that gap, safely and quickly.

What coaches are actually watching

  • Physical readiness — college soccer is athletic. Coaches want to see you cope with pace and duels.
  • Decisions under pressure — the first look, the scan, the simple pass at the right time.
  • Attitude — body language after a mistake, communication, and how you respond to being substituted or challenged.
  • Coachability — players who take instruction in the moment stand out more than the most talented player who doesn't.

Why a good bad game still helps you

You will not play perfectly on tour — nobody does. But coaches recruit profiles, not single matches. A player who competes for 90 minutes against stronger opposition often moves up a coach's list faster than a flashy player who disappears when the game gets physical.

Know your level before you fly

Going on tour with an honest assessment behind you means you arrive knowing what to prove — and which programmes to speak to. Going in blind wastes the most expensive visibility you will ever buy.

Get calibrated before you travel: book a £75 video or £150 in-person assessment and we'll tell you where you fit.
