Moving from a Scandinavian football club to an American university is about more than changing teams. For male and female players in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the college soccer pathway offers the possibility of continuing competitive football while studying towards a degree. The right opportunity needs to match the individual: their playing level, academic goals, budget and readiness to live abroad.

Football and education, considered together

An attractive team is only one part of a good college choice. Players should also consider the course they want to study, the university environment, the coach's plans for their position and the total cost of attendance. A suitable programme should support both their development on the pitch and their future beyond football.

NCAA, NAIA and junior-college programmes offer different routes. Scholarship availability and eligibility requirements vary, and NCAA Division III does not award athletic scholarships. Families should compare the actual offer rather than assume a division label guarantees a better football experience or a lower cost.

What Scandinavian players need to prepare

  • Football evidence: recent match footage, a clear player profile, club history and a coach reference where available.
  • Academic records: school results, qualifications and the documents requested by each university and eligibility body.
  • A complete playing history: club registrations, contracts, payments and any previous college study that may affect eligibility.
  • A realistic budget: understand what an offer covers and what remains for tuition, accommodation, meals, insurance and travel.
  • A workable timeline: allow time for recruitment, admissions, eligibility checks and the student visa process.

Local understanding, with experience of the American system

The photograph above captures Jamie Bennett and Arild ‘Arry’ Visth arriving in the USA in 1998. Today, they work together to help the next generation of players and families explore their own American football and education pathway.

Stride USA's Head of Recruitment for Scandinavia, Arild Visth, works alongside Jamie Bennett to help players and families explore the pathway.

Arild Visth brings over 20 years of experience in football, player development, coaching and sports management. A former U.S. college soccer player, he has firsthand knowledge of the American college system and the opportunities it offers aspiring athletes.

Our Scandinavia page introduces Arild and explains how an initial conversation can lead into a review of football fit, education and the next steps towards US college soccer. It also invites coaches and football contacts to connect with Stride USA's growing Scandinavian scouting network.

Start with a conversation, not a commitment

Players do not need to have every answer before getting in touch. A free online meeting is a chance to discuss their current club and school situation, preferred study areas, intended start date and family budget. Join Jamie and Arild on a call to talk through the best next steps for your individual journey.

Every player has a different starting point. A scholarship, admission, playing time or professional career cannot be guaranteed; the aim is to identify realistic options and make informed decisions together.
