Coaches do not recruit 'a good player' in the abstract — they recruit a position, and what they value shifts with it. Understanding the profile for your role helps you build footage and a trial performance that actually answers a coach's needs.
Defenders
For centre-backs, coaches value positioning, aerial ability, composure under pressure and the quality of distribution out of defence. Full-backs are judged on recovery pace, one-v-one defending and the engine to attack and defend repeatedly. Defending is still the first filter; everything offensive sits on top of it.
Midfielders
Central midfielders are assessed on range of passing, scanning, receiving under pressure and the stamina to dominate both boxes. A coach wants to see decisions, not just touches — when to play simple, when to break a line, when to slow the game.

Wide players and forwards
Wingers are judged on one-v-one ability, end product and the willingness to track back. Strikers are measured on movement, finishing under pressure, hold-up play and the timing of runs. For all attacking roles, a coach looks for threat and for work-rate without the ball, not just moments of skill.
Show your role, not someone else's. A trial clip that proves you can do the specific job a coach is recruiting for beats a highlight reel of general quality every time.
