Core Courses and GPA: The Academic Eligibility You Need for US College Soccer

Core-course requirements, the GPA that matters and why your subject choices from age 14 quietly shape your eligibility.

Athletic eligibility is not just about football — it is built on your academic record, and specifically on a defined set of 'core courses'. Get these right from early in secondary school and you keep every door open; miss them and even a gifted player can be ruled out.

What counts as a core course

Core courses are academic, college-preparatory classes — English, mathematics, natural or physical science, social science, and additional core areas — rather than practical or vocational options. The NCAA publishes a list of approved courses for each school, and only those count toward eligibility.

GPA on a US scale

  • Eligibility GPA is calculated only from core courses, not your overall school average.
  • It is typically reported on a 4.0 scale, so overseas grades must be translated accordingly.
  • Division I, II and NAIA each set their own minimum core-GPA expectations.
  • A higher core GPA lowers the test score you need through the sliding scale.

For UK and international students, the equivalent subjects usually map across — English, maths and sciences are the spine of it — but the mapping must be checked, not assumed. This is the single most common reason a strong recruit is ruled ineligible late, and it is entirely avoidable.
