Full Ride vs Partial Scholarships in College Soccer: The Reality

Why full-ride soccer scholarships are rare, how partials actually work and how to stack aid to close the gap.

The full-ride scholarship is the part of US college sport most families misunderstand. In head-count sports a small number of athletes do receive a guaranteed full ride. In soccer — an equivalency sport — a true full ride is the exception, awarded to a handful of players per team rather than the whole roster.

Why partials are normal

A coach has a fixed allowance to spread across a squad. Splitting it into partials lets them recruit more players and build depth, which is why a '30% athletic offer' can be a strong and legitimate offer rather than a slight. The number means little without the cost of attendance next to it.

Closing the gap

  • Academic merit aid, awarded for grades and test scores, often stacks on top.
  • Need-based aid can further reduce the family contribution.
  • Some programmes offer additional awards for international students.
  • Grades are the lever most directly under a recruit's control.
