The National Letter of Intent is the binding agreement that locks a student athlete to a college for one year in exchange for athletic aid. Signing one ends the recruiting process — other participating colleges must stop recruiting you — so it is a moment to approach with certainty, not relief.
What you are agreeing to
- To attend the named college for at least one academic year.
- In return for the athletic aid set out in the agreement.
- That other participating programmes will stop recruiting you immediately.
The signing windows
NLI signing typically happens in defined windows during the school year — commonly an early period in late autumn and a later spring window that can run through the summer. The exact dates move each year, so confirm the current window for your division rather than relying on last year's.

Before you sign, make sure the financial detail is in writing: what the scholarship covers, what it does not, and how it is renewed. An NLI is a commitment on both sides, and clarity now prevents a difficult conversation later.
Signing should feel like the end of a careful decision, not the escape from a stressful one. Never sign to make the noise stop — sign because the fit is right.
